Record Audio
This shortcut is for those times when you would like to record some audio onto your phone and it's safe and legal to do so. The shortcut saves the audio recordings to your iCloud file storage.
How to use
How to use
- Run the shortcut.
- The shortcut screen will go dark and a counter will appear on the screen to tell you how long you've been recording.
- When you're done recording, tap the screen.
- The shortcut will automatically save the recording to your iCloud storage.
How it works
How it works
- The first thing the shortcut does is generate the file name of the shortcut using the current date and a random number.
- The shortcut then saves the name of the file in a file in your iCloud storage.
- Then the shortcut starts recording audio until you tell it to stop.
- Once stopped, the shortcut saves the audio to your iCloud storage using the name it created earlier.
Get links to audio files
Once the files have been recorded and saved, this shortcut sends you a link to all the recordings you created on a given day. You can choose to send the email to yourself or someone else.
How to use
How to use
- Once you have finished making recordings, run this shortcut.
- The shortcut will ask if you want to send the email to your own saved email address or a different one from your contacts.
- The shortcut will ask you for the date of the files you're looking for.
- The shortcut will send an email to the address you specified with links to the recordings that were generated on that day (as long as they were generated using the other shortcut).
How it works
How it works
- When the shortcut runs, it asks for the email address to send the email to.
- Then it will ask for the date of the recordings.
- The shortcut will reference the file in your iCloud storage that stores the file names of the recordings generated using the other shortcut and pull out the ones created on the given date.
- It will use those file names to find the share links.
- Then it will create HTML links for each one.
- Finally it will email those links to the selected email address.
The shortcut has to work this way because of how iCloud file storage works. The share link can't be known until the file completes uploading, so the links can't be sent out instantaneously when the recordings are generated. And because the files take a really long time to search directly, we have to store them in a text file that takes less time to search.
How to get started with Shortcuts
If you have iOS 13, you already have the Shortcuts app. That means that if you're on your iPhone or iPad right now, you can just click the Download button to download a shortcut. If you're not on your phone, you can email the link to yourself to download it later.
You can can start using most shortcuts right away, unless they work with another app that you need to have installed. That will be indicated on the in the post above. Once you have downloaded a shortcut, it belongs to you and you can make any changes you like. The shortcuts I make and publish here don't send any data back to me and I don't make any money from publishing them.
Once you have download a shortcut you can choose how to run it. These are your options:
- When you want to run a shortcut, open your Shortcuts app and all the shortcuts in your library will be there to choose from. Just tap on it.
- To save the step of navigating to your Shortcuts app you can add a shortcut to your iPhone’s home screen so it’s easily accessible.
- Some shortcuts will automatically show up in your phone’s Share menu under “Shortcuts”.
- In the shortcut’s settings you can “Add to Siri” by recording a phrase that will trigger it. Later you can say “Hey Siri” followed by that phrase and Siri will run that shortcut for you.
- You can also set up shortcuts to run automatically in the Automations tab in the Shortcuts app. You can select from a good variety of triggers such as "When my wake up alarm stops" or "When I arrive at work".
